Brief History

YWCA Kisii Branch is one of the seven Branches of the YWCA Kenya based in Nyanza Province-Kisii County, the rural part of Kenya. Since inception in 1986, the Branch has grown with overwhelming support from different donors i.e. Global Ministries of United Churches of Netherlands, AMREF MAANISHA, MILDMAY INTERNATIONAL, Global Fund through Red Cross and many others. All of them have given our branch an opportunity to illustrate our vision “A society where girls and women actualize their potential” and enabled the organization to develop successive strategic plans with an objective of responding to the socio-Economic, political and cultural issues affecting girls and women in the society.
Programmes is the core life line of YWCA and all geared towards addressing the needs of women and girls and the communities in which they live.

The organization is a membership organization and currently has a total of 3500 members comprised of women, youths, young teens, associate members and individual members.

The organization covers the larger Nyamira, Kisii ,Migori and Homabay Counties in Nyanza Region.

Main activities:

The Branch is committed to Community Based Development programs focusing on;

  1. Health issues,
  2. Gender Based Violence (G.B.V),
  3. Young Women’s Leadership,
  4. Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights,
  5. HIV/AIDS,
  6. Female Genital Mutilation(FGM),
  7. Economic Empowerment,
  8. Environment,
  9. Water and Sanitation,
  10. Justice, Peace and Rights promotion.

In addition to the community programmes, the branch also provides:

  1. Hostels with a capacity of two beds each, mostly providing accommodation from nearby universities.
  2. Social hall for hire and where trainings are held by different partners.
  3. A centre in Nyamira for rescuing the young girls who are at risk of Gender Based Violence.

Partners and collaborators:

The organization works closely with the Ministry of Health(MOH), APHIA PLUS- Western Kenya in implementing programs on behavior change targeting the youths, NACC on HIV prevention and Care, Global Fund through Red Cross on  the road map towards enhancing HIV Free society on several intervention e.g. Care and support to chronically ill, Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV& AIDS and Governance, AMREF MAANISHA, World YWCA on mobilizing the young women’s leadership for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, KFUK-KFUM Norway on eradicating Female Genital Mutilation.
